Norwegian Citizenship Requirements
To obtain Norwegian citizenship, you must have a valid residence permit in Norway and meet several other requirements, including:
- Identity Verification: Your identity must be documented or clarified.
- Residence in Norway: You must reside in Norway and intend to continue living there.
- Marriage to a Norwegian Citizen: If you are married to, or are the registered partner or cohabitant of a Norwegian citizen, the combined time you have lived in Norway and been married, registered partners, or cohabitants must be at least 7 years. You must still be married, registered partners, or cohabiting at the time of the decision.
- Language Skills: You must have completed 300 hours of tuition in the Norwegian language or be able to document sufficient skills in Norwegian or Sami.
- Good Conduct Requirement: You must not have been convicted of a crime or required to undergo enforced psychiatric treatment or care.
- Single Citizenship: Under Norwegian law, dual citizenship is generally not permitted. Therefore, a person applying for Norwegian citizenship must renounce their previous citizenship.
Special rules apply to children under the age of 12 and people over the age of 55 who apply for Norwegian citizenship. People who arrived in Norway before reaching the age of 18 must have lived there for a total of 5 years during the past 7 years.
Note: You must hold a valid permit while your citizenship application is being processed. The application alone does not grant legal status, so you must apply for a renewal of your permit at least one month before it expires.
After becoming a Norwegian citizen, you will be invited to participate in a voluntary citizenship ceremony to mark the transition. The County Governor organizes these events.
